Second, previous theories often presume that coupling patterns reflectwhite preferences. ![]() ![]() No one else should ever be allowed to televise Shakespeare…There is so much I was proud of: discovering how to play a soliloquy direct into the eyes of everyone in the audience making them laugh at Macbeth’s gallows humor working alongside Judi Dench’s finest performance. Trevor had used a similar technique with Antony and Cleopatra on the box. The claustrophobia of the stage production was exactly captured. McKellen recalled that everyone was already so well acquainted with the material, it took just two weeks to get it in the can: The production’s success inspired director Trevor Nunn to film it. In performance, the theatrical metaphor should remind the audience that they’re watching a pretense even as they’re invested in the character’s fate. He speculates that Shakespeare’s description of life as a “poor player” was a deliberate attempt by the playwright to give the actor an interpretive hook they could relate to. McKellen makes a true meal of “out, out, brief candle”, relating it to Lady Macbeth’s final appearance, the fools proceeding to their dusty death earlier in the monologue, and Elizabethan stage lighting. Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, That struts and frets his hour upon the stage, Life’s but a walking shadow, a poor player, McKellen begins his examination of the text by noting how “she would have died hereafter” sets up the final soliloquy’s preoccupation with time, and its passage.Ĭreeps in this petty pace from day to day,Īnd all our yesterdays have lighted fools ![]() ![]() Everything disgusts him, and his only reason for fighting to the death is that the thought of subjection is the most disgusting of all. What fuels him most is envy, reaching incredulously forward (“The seed of Banquo kings?”) and backward to color the despair of “Duncan is in his grave.” The words, and the mind behind them, are rancid, and it is this mood that takes possession of his last scenes. Once her prosaic, limited ambition is achieved, she is of no more use to him and he shrugs her off “she would have died hereafter” is a moment of exasperation that dares our laughter. His wife pulls him along a road that he would travel anyway and he can allow himself scruples, knowing that she will be there to mop them up. McKellen’s Macbeth is witty not merely the horror but the absurdity of his actions strikes him from the outset, and he can regard his downfall as an inexorable joke. The New York Times raved about the production, declaring McKellen “the best equipped British actor of his generations:” A priest used to sit on the front row, whenever he could scrounge a ticket, holding out his crucifix to protect the cast from the evil we were raising. Somehow it was magic: and black magic, too. My uniform jacket had buttons embossed with ‘Birmingham Fire Service’ my long, leather coat didn’t fit, nor did Banquo‘s so we had to wear them slung over the shoulder Judi Dench, as Lady Macbeth, wore a dyed tea-towel on her head. John Napier‘s entire set cost £200 and the costumes were a ragbag of second-hand clothes. It was beautifully done on the cheap in The Other Place, the old tin hut along from the main theatre. As McKellen recalled in a longer meditation on the trickiness of staging this particular tragedy: McKellen was, at the time, deeply immersed in Macbeth, playing the title role opposite Judi Dench in a bare bones Royal Shakespeare Company production that opened in the company’s Stratford studio before transferring to the West End. In this way, he says, “the actor is the playwright and the character simultaneously.” Instead, he calls upon actors to apply the power of their intellect to every line, analyzing metaphors and imagery, while also noting punctuation, word choice, and of course, the events leading up to the speech. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() If “The Eras Tour” wasn’t taken by a certain other artist, the name could well apply.īruce Springsteen and the E Street Band Launch World Tour With Ecstatic, Emotional Tampa Show There’s a clear narrative to most, though definitely not all, of the song choices, as well as an obvious intent to show off almost every side of the band and each epoch of his career, from the Van Morrison-derived jazz-rock of 1973’s “Kitty’s Back” and junkyard R&B of the same year’s “The E Street Shuffle” forward. It’s that aspect he’s emphasizing this time around, with a nearly static setlist, perhaps in part to allow the band to focus their finite energy on the details of some of his best-known songs in lieu of staying ready to play one of a hundred obscurities on a millisecond’s notice. That paradox, that dance between age and agelessness, is at the heart of Springsteen and the E Street Band’s current tour, which is dedicated to both prove-it-all-night power drives and relentless reminders of a coming day “when all our summers have come to an end,” as he puts it in the wrenching, solo-acoustic show-closer, “I’ll See You in My Dreams.” In the wake of Springsteen and the band’s first hometown-ish show in seven years, here’s what the show taught us about the tour, the current state of the E Street Band, and more. ![]() They eased the E Street Band into the 11-minute-long, 48-year-old mini-rock-opera “Jungleland,” played and sung with enough muscle and drama and soaring perfection to momentarily make the rest of the show’s messages seem like a lie. ![]() Coinciding with the 40th anniversary of Springsteen's debut album, Greetings from Asbury Park, drawing on interviews and access to new recordings and shows, Heylin paints a bold picture of The Boss. After a two-hour-plus main set that slammed home themes of mortality and impermanence and the way of all flesh, Bruce Springsteen reemerged on Madison Square Garden’s stage Saturday night, April 1, for his usual lengthy encore, and announced “something special for New York City.” He pointed over at Soozie Tyrell, who began a dead-on recreation of one of rock’s few canonical violin melodies, over piano from all-time-great arpeggio purveyor Roy Bittan. Fans will also learn another side of Springsteen, one punctuated with his clashes with studio executives seeking a commercially viable, radio-friendly album, and his temporary disbanding of the E Street Band to pursue projects like the eerie acoustic of Nebraska. The band's players-most notably saxophonist Clarence "Big Man" Clemons, guitarist "Little" Stevie Van Zandt, and drummer Max Weinberg-became Springsteen's comrades in concert, helping him find the elusive sound and sonic punch that highlighted The Boss's most creative period, including Darkness on the Edge of Town, Born to Run, and Born in the USA. Clinton Heylin's revelatory biography, E Street Shuffle, chronicles the evolution and influence of Springsteen's E Street Band as they rose from blue-collar New Jersey to the heights of rock stardom. After a century of dealing with significant floods and droughts (such as 1902 when the Brisbane River threatened to run dry!) major dams were proposed for the dual purpose of providing water storage during prolonged drought and flood mitigation during extreme rainfall. The handleless rail was to be used in the island to bring in the brass detail, which worked well against the dark painted door fronts. ![]() Also, the number of people that will be using the kitchen is something to factor in too. Worktop space is key, as well as storage for essentials, making the kitchen easier to work within. The hob or sink being on the island is also an important factor and will have a knock-on effect for where everything will go. Key considerations are the appliances, this defines the layout and then you work on the basis of an island or peninsula and if having seating in the kitchen, what sort of seating and to seat how many. What are the key considerations when designing a kitchen for a large open plan space such as this? The built-in bench allows the table to be pushed further to the walls and look cosy and inviting. With more kitchens nowadays being open plan and dining areas being less formal, this arrangement worked well as the space is tight for a free-standing table and chairs. The open plan kitchen and dining area features three seating areas as well as an outdoor seating arrangement, how have you defined these and is this now the norm? I used it on our handleless rails in the island and the handles on the fridge, as well as the bespoke brass shelf. I use it a lot in high end kitchens, not least because it can be easily carried through to other furnishings. We love the colour scheme with flashes of brass, can you tell us more about this?īrass is very on trend and brings a touch of luxury to a design. The clients chose an induction hob, combination steam oven, traditional oven and a warming drawer which can also be used for low temperature cooking. However, the Miele dishwasher we chose had a ‘knock to open’ function so there was no problem raising the door front to suit the dishwasher and putting our touch latches on the sink cabinet door, and the bins on an electric tip-on Blumotion which doesn’t require a handle. The other requirement was the extra tall dishwasher that wouldn’t ordinarily work in our URBO range as it’s too tall to fit below our handleless rail. Miele’s ArtLine design in Obsidian Black glass is completely handleless and was the perfect complement to the brass accents featured throughout the kitchen. They wanted appliances that would give restaurant quality results yet would also seamlessly fit into the handleless design. The owners are complete foodies and love to cook and entertain. Why was Miele selected for the cooking appliances? So, we were limited for space, but I came up with a layout that fitted all the appliances in and still kept it functional. It meant we needed to put the tall units all along one wall for the kitchen and keep the other wall for dining seating. Did the kitchen opening out onto the garden impact on the design? Ducting is always a challenge, but it still worked out with this design. We therefore opted for a downdraft extractor with the ducting fitted under the floors and then up behind the fridge through the ceiling. However, the skylights above the island created a much brighter space. Not really other than the extraction for the island hob, which couldn’t be a ceiling mounted extractor, which we would normally recommend. We understand the kitchen is located in a new lower ground level extension did this present any challenges for the design? To create a sociable kitchen which opened up to the garden and also had comfortable seating. What was the starting point for the design? Almost completely handleless with a touch of brass, this cool blue kitchen has been designed to maximise storage, seating and be as functional as possible for this family home. ![]() Here, Allison Lynch from Roundhouse Design talks about how she met her clients’ brief to design a contemporary style kitchen for a Victorian town house that would stand the test of time.
